A Street Map of London 1843

First published 167 years ago
One of the earliest detailed street maps of London drawn to a scale of three and a quarter inches to the mile and published over a century and a half ago so that passengers in Hansom cabs could check that they were being taken by the shortest route. Faithfully reproducing the original hand colouring, it shows street names, prominent buildings, the new docks in the lower reaches of The Thames, numerous factories beside the river, canals leading away to other parts of the country and a few of the earliest railways. All is shown in minute detail.

Beyond the limits of the developed area, which in 1843 extended no further than Hyde Park in the west and Stepney in the east, can be seen the orchards and market gardens of Chelsea and Southwark, the marshes of the Isle of Dogs and the outlying villages of Earls Court, Kentish Town and Bow.

Each map has a history describing London in 1843 which helps to set the scene as you embark on your journey through the capital in early Victorian times. Use it to see where you live now or to research the lives of your forebears.
